In a word: "Inoculation"
A good salesperson inoculates against objections from a prospect by covering them before they have a chance to come up. And, you can inoculate your body and mind against weight rebound by covering the bases with this 5-step approach, outlined in more detail in my article in Mobile Life Today:
1) Instead of trying to change all your habits at once, set goals for a just a few, impactful healthier habits that are based on how you normally live.
2) Instead of just tracking weight, convert your weight goal into goals for an inch lost off the waist or abdomen every 4-6 weeks. Get free of the emotional swings that accompany water-weight fluctuations and reinforce the fat loss instead.
3) Rather than trying to eat "perfectly", plan to eat something enjoyable just often enough that you never feel deprived.
4) Weight train so you gain calorie-burning muscle instead of losing it. (This is another reason for #2, since muscle gain makes the scale less relevant)
5) Find the right balance of managing your eating and exercise so the synergy of the two working together give you the results you want. Exercise is necessary but not sufficient without good eating management to supplement it.
